Rev gets lucky
Rev Walker defeated Gülay Garabli by the narrowest of margins to win the 2007 CMC stroke play competition. He got off to a shocking start as he fell ten shots behind (on handicap) after just three holes. But he settled down and with the help of an excellent short game the margin was halved at the turn.
The margin was still five shots through thirteen holes but the tide turned at number fifteen when Rev added to his front nine birdie on the same brown with a second chip in.
A shaken Gülay could only manage a six for a four shot swing. With the scores level, Rev seemed to have blown it when his tee shot on sixteen found the oxalis and he had to take three off the tee. Inexplicably however, Gülay played the wrong ball to incur a two-stroke penalty negating Rev’s error.
A par on seventeen saw Rev take the lead for the first time and a shaky four on eighteen kept his nose in front, as he somewhat fortuitously claimed the title.
